A major Binance hack didn’t begin with some sophisticated attack on the exchange’s front door. According to a preliminary investigation timeline, attackers compromised employees, stole credentials and eventually reached the platform’s internal wallet signing service.

The sequence raises uncomfortable questions about internal security. Three engineers became part of an attack chain that ultimately enabled unauthorized asset transfers.

Binance Hack Began With A Tampered Download

The trouble reportedly started in June, when Wallet DevOps Engineer A downloaded a tampered Homebrew installer while configuring an AI coding tool. Binance detected the incident, replaced the device and rotated credentials. However, information about the engineer and colleagues had already been exposed.

Then came September. Engineer B downloaded a malicious code repository during what appeared to be a fake job interview, compromising his work computer.

Binance Hack Timeline: How Attackers Compromised Three Engineers to Access Wallet Signing Service

Stolen Credentials Opened The Internal Door

On October 20, attackers reportedly used the compromised device and an internal AI tool to gain control over Engineers A and C. They also discovered a container deployment permission token on Engineer A’s computer.

The operation escalated on October 29. Attackers accessed Engineer C’s device, used credentials stolen from A, deployed a container and executed a malicious script. That sequence ultimately enabled unauthorized transfers through Binance’s internal wallet signing service.

Google Ad Allegation Remains Unconfirmed

A separate commentator claimed the roughly $6 billion Binance hack resulted from a developer clicking a malicious Google advertisement, and argued Google should be held responsible.

However, the preliminary timeline does not establish that connection. It describes a tampered installer and a malicious repository, not a confirmed Google ad as the entry point.

Wow, turns out the $6 billion Binance hack was caused by a Binance developer clicking a malicious Google ad!

I maintain my position: it’s more important than ever to hold Google liable for platforming scams and turning a blind eye.

The distinction matters. The Binance hack timeline points to compromised engineers, exposed credentials and deployment permissions as key parts of the attack. Blaming an advertising platform without evidence risks obscuring the specific security failures investigators are still examining.
