China’s stock market is facing one of its toughest periods in more than a decade as investors retreat from technology shares and reassess the country’s economic outlook. The CSI 300 has extended its losing streak to 12 consecutive weeks, falling 15% over the period and recording an 8.5% monthly decline in October. The latest selling has continued into November, despite Beijing announcing fresh measures to stabilise the market. Here are the three key factors driving the China stock market sell-off.

AI Sell-Off Triggers Heavy Losses in China Tech Stocks

The global retreat from artificial intelligence stocks has become a major drag on Chinese equities. Investors are increasingly questioning whether the massive spending on AI infrastructure, semiconductors and computing capacity will generate sufficient returns.

China’s technology sector has been particularly vulnerable. The STAR 50 index, which tracks major technology companies listed on Shanghai’s STAR Market, has fallen around 40% from its late-June peak, erasing approximately $480 billion in market value.

The pressure intensified in October as selling spread across semiconductor and communications equipment companies. On October 30, the CSI 5G communications index dropped 6.2%, while optical module maker Eoptolink Technology plunged 14%. The STAR 50 also fell 5.5% during the session.

The weakness reflects growing concerns about AI valuations and the profitability of heavy capital expenditure. Investors are reassessing whether the expected growth in AI demand can justify the valuations built into technology stocks earlier this year.

China’s Economic Weakness Adds to Market Pressure

Beyond the technology sell-off, persistent economic challenges are weighing on investor confidence. Weak domestic consumption and continued stress in the property sector have raised questions about the strength of China’s economic recovery.

The property market remains a significant concern, particularly as developers continue to face financial pressure. Recent reports that state-owned developer Zhuhai Huafa Group was seeking extensions on certain bank loans have added to worries about debt-related risks in the sector.

These concerns are creating an uncertain outlook for businesses and investors. Weak domestic demand can limit corporate revenue growth, while property-sector stress threatens to weigh on broader economic activity.

The CSI 300’s 8.5% October decline reflects the combination of these domestic challenges and the global technology sell-off. The index also lost 15% over 12 weeks, marking its longest losing streak on record.

Beijing’s Support Measures Fail to Restore Investor Confidence

Chinese authorities have stepped up efforts to stabilise the stock market following October’s sharp losses. However, the latest measures have yet to convince investors that a sustained recovery is underway.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced another round of swap operations that could provide more than 100 billion yuan in liquidity to financial institutions for stock purchases. It also made its share-buyback relending programme permanent and reduced the related interest rate from 1.25% to 1%.

Meanwhile, regulators encouraged major listed companies and leading technology firms to buy back shares. They also urged newly launched exchange-traded funds to build positions faster and are considering easing margin requirements to improve market liquidity.

The announcements initially supported a rebound, with the Shanghai Composite rising 1.1% on Monday, November 2. However, Chinese stocks reversed course in early trading on Tuesday, November 3, as investors continued selling technology and energy shares. The CSI 300 and Shanghai Composite both fell roughly 1% in early trade.

What Comes Next for the China Stock Market?

The outlook for Chinese equities will depend on whether policymakers can restore confidence and address the economic concerns driving the sell-off. Further liquidity support may help limit short-term volatility, but it may not be enough to reverse the broader downturn.

Investors will closely monitor AI companies’ earnings, domestic consumption and developments in the property sector for signs of improvement. A recovery in technology stocks could also help stabilise broader market sentiment.

For now, the CSI 300’s 8.5% October decline and the continued weakness in technology shares underline the challenges facing China’s equity market. Until investors see stronger earnings prospects and a more convincing economic recovery, the market could remain under pressure.
