Robinhood Chief Executive Vlad Tenev returned to the platform after the X account was compromised and announced that they were waiting for information from the X team to clarify the details of the incident. Tenev also emphasized that Robinhood has not issued any coins or tokens despite its intense activities in the cryptocurrency space.

Confirmation received from the company

Robinhood’s communications team confirmed that Tenev’s account was compromised for the purpose of promoting a fake meme coin. The company stated that they worked with X to regain access to the account and that the relevant post was removed. Robinhood is known as a US-based financial technology company that offers stock and cryptocurrency trading.

After regaining access to the X account, Vlad Tenev emphasized that Robinhood did not issue any coins or tokens and urged users to be careful.

Tenev stated in his post that they are waiting for the details to be provided by X to understand how the account was compromised. The statement stood out as one of the latest examples of social media accounts being used for crypto-themed fraud attempts.

Crypto-themed account takeover method is becoming widespread

In such attacks, accounts with high followers are generally targeted. After taking over accounts, attackers try to mislead users by posting fake token promotions or giving away gifts. Especially well-known company executives and corporate accounts are frequently used in these methods as it creates a sense of trust.

Mini dictionary: Tokenization refers to the process of converting the ownership or economic value of an asset into a digital token on the blockchain. Real-world assets include digital representations of off-chain assets such as real estate, bonds or commodities.

Robinhood’s communications team announced that Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised, a fake meme coin was promoted, and the post was removed.

Similar events have happened before

In 2020, many prominent X accounts, including Elon Musk, were compromised and a fake Bitcoin distribution was announced. In September 2023, a fake NFT distribution was shared by misusing the account of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

In a similar incident, the official X account of the US Securities and Exchange Commission was also accessed without permission. An early and incorrect announcement was shared through the account that spot Bitcoin ETFs were approved, and this development created a short-term sharp movement in the Bitcoin price.

The last example was seen on the Airbnb front

Earlier in the month, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced that account X had been compromised. The attackers published a long series of posts about blockchain-based tokenization and real-world assets on this account. This content showed that the attackers were not limited to promoting fake coins, but also used different themes from time to time.

The incident regarding Vlad Tenev’s account has led to renewed discussion of the social media security of well-known names connected to the crypto market. Following the investigation between the company and X, more details are expected to emerge regarding the method of the attack and how access was achieved.
