The Open Network (TON) announced that the activities of Toncoin and Token Bridge, which have been an important part of the blockchain ecosystem for a long time, will be completely stopped on September 1, 2026. The announcement shows that this infrastructure, which carried assets between different blockchains in the early stages of the network, has now completed its mission.
Final steps for users
The TON team shared on its official Telegram channel that all transfers previously made by users have been processed; He stated that for pending transfers, transaction fees on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain are covered by TON. During the remaining withdrawal period, all transfer fees charged on a percentage basis were reset to zero.
Users who hold Toncoin “wrapped” on Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain must transfer these assets back to the TON network by September 1, 2026. Additionally, users who hold j-tokens in their TON wallet must withdraw their assets received via the bridge, such as jUSDT, jUSDC, jDAI, jWBTC, to Ethereum. Bridge oracles will withdraw staked TON balances in June 2026, but will continue transfer transactions until the closing date.
Particular attention was drawn to the fact that all wrapped Toncoin holders must transfer their assets to appropriate networks by the specified deadline.
Reason for closure: Maturation of the ecosystem
The closure of the Toncoin bridge was first announced to the public in April 2025. Transfers to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain were terminated as of May 10, 2025, and additional time was given for asset withdrawals from the bridge. In 2021, when the bridge was established, Toncoin was not included in central exchanges and decentralized finance infrastructure had not yet been formed in the ecosystem. Therefore, the bridge was the only solution for users who wanted to transfer TON via platforms such as Uniswap and PancakeSwap in the early period.
J-token transfer support was also offered with the V3 version of the bridge in 2023. However, over time, with the introduction of USDt, its own stablecoin on TON, and the growth of the decentralized exchange (DEX) ecosystem, the old role of the bridge became dysfunctional. In particular, the phasing out of jUSDT accelerated the complete closure of bridge infrastructure.
Featured data and new technical options on the bridge
TON successfully completed 31,893 transfers before deactivating the bridge, moving over 101 million TON tokens in total. Wrapped Toncoin on Ethereum was held in 35,694 different wallets, while more than 460 thousand transactions were recorded; On the BNB Smart Chain side, these figures were announced as 113,495 users and 2.6 million transactions, respectively.
| Network | Wrapped Toncoin Owner | Number of Transactions |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | 35,694 | 460,000+ |
| BNB Smart Chain | 113,495 | 2,600,000+ |
Currently, TON has integrations that support direct, non-wrapped asset transfers with next-generation bridge solutions such as LayerZero, Stargate, Symbiosis and Rhino.fi. In particular, Stargate offers instant transfers and shared liquidity between more than 80 networks thanks to LayerZero’s cross-blockchain messaging infrastructure.
Mini dictionary: LayerZero is an interchain messaging protocol that aims to securely and quickly transfer data and assets between different blockchains. This system enables shared liquidity and dynamic cross-chain transactions across multiple networks.
However, the LayerZero protocol was criticized due to the Kelp DAO leak last April, and some platforms switched to Chainlink’s CCIP bridge for security reasons.
The legacy of the TON bridge
It was stated that while the bridge was in operation, there were no serious security breaches, and all transfers were recorded securely. TON officials emphasize that user safety is increased with modern bridge solutions and that with the closure of old infrastructure, the ecosystem can focus on more innovative applications.
