Credit rating agency Moody’s has made a significant development in the digital asset market, giving the highest credit rating, AAA-mf, to tokenized money market funds offered by Fidelity and BlackRock. This rating indicates that the relevant funds offer high liquidity, strong capital protection and a low risk profile.
Confidence Increases in Tokenized Funds
Money market funds, long known in the financial industry, focus on short-term and safe investments such as treasury bills, short-term commercial papers and certificates of deposit. In recent years, digital versions of these traditional products have begun to be released with new blockchain-based solutions. Fidelity’s FILQ fund and BlackRock’s BUIDL fund stand out as the two major players in this field.
Fidelity’s FILQ fund hit the market on May 6. Thanks to the Desygnate platform of Switzerland-based digital asset bank Sygnum, many services such as fund registration, smart contract transactions, and stablecoin buying and selling transactions are offered on the blockchain. In addition, JPMorgan Chase takes part in custody and fund management processes, and Apex Group takes part in transfer transactions, while Chainlink publishes the fund’s net asset value and distribution data on-chain.
The BUIDL fund, introduced by BlackRock in March 2024, uses Securitize’s infrastructure as a transfer agent and tokenization platform. BUIDL, which was rated AAA by Moody’s yesterday, is among the largest tokenized treasury funds globally.
Rapid Growth in the Market
United States Treasuries, bonds and digitalized versions of money market funds based on these assets have experienced explosive growth in two years. According to the rwa.xyz platform, which provides data on the sector, the total managed asset size of the tokenized treasury market exceeded $15 billion. This figure was only $1 billion two years ago.
“Tokenized finance would not be possible without tokenized liquidity. Once transactions in the market occur instantly, cash must be met instantly,” said Fidelity International Digital Assets Distribution Director Emma Pecenicic, drawing attention to the importance of real-time solutions in the sector.
Tokenized money market funds are gaining increasing traction among both traditional financial institutions and crypto industry pioneers. These types of funds offer investors a highly secure, income-generating and low-risk investment opportunity on the blockchain.
Orientation towards New Generation Investment Tools
Money market funds provide a safe haven for investors, especially in volatile markets. Tokenized versions, on the other hand, combine the advantages of instant transaction ease and transparency offered by blockchain technology with the traditional finance experience. The growing interest of industry leaders such as BlackRock and Fidelity in this area is considered an important sign that tokenized financial products are becoming mainstream.
Industry experts express the opinion that AAA level credit ratings offer investors an additional element of confidence. These digital products, which are currently launched as alternatives to traditional money market funds, are expected to attract the attention of a wider audience of investors in the coming period.
