Why did the ban come to the fore? What other regulations are planned?History of crypto ATMs and new risks

Canada is preparing to take an important step towards banning cryptocurrency ATMs in the country. This regulation, which was brought to the agenda within the scope of the Spring Economic Update published by the government, was proposed on the grounds that crypto ATMs are used extensively in fraud and illegal money laundering activities. The Canadian administration plans to close all cryptocurrency ATMs, highlighting the protection of citizens due to the misuse of the machines by criminals.

Why did the ban come to the fore?

Cryptocurrency ATMs offer face-to-face deposits and conversion into digital money. However, according to authorities, these machines are often preferred by criminal organizations and fraudsters because they bypass classical banking systems and allow anonymous transactions. Thanks to these ATMs, users can easily convert their cash into digital assets such as Bitcoin and send them anywhere in the world. During this process, it is possible to bypass the authentication and audit mechanisms in classical banks. Canadian Financial Intelligence Center FINTRAC reported in its 2023 internal analysis that crypto ATMs remain “the primary method for diverting funds that fraudsters collect and launder from victims.”

The government included the following views in its official statement:

“To protect Canadians, we aim to completely ban these machines, which are used by fraudsters to deceive victims and have become a primary means of converting the proceeds of crime into cash.”

Authorities say crypto ATMs have become attractive to fraud networks, in line with warnings from law enforcement and financial regulators. In addition, it has been reported that these machines are at the heart of criminal activities in some cases in recent years.

What other regulations are planned?

On the other hand, in Canada, the transfer of crypto currencies to election campaigns through donations has also become a matter of debate. Lawmakers are discussing restricting the use of cryptocurrencies as an official payment method because election donations can be made secretly. It was stated that this new measure was brought to the agenda in order to protect transparency in the election and facilitate source tracking.

History of crypto ATMs and new risks

Canada has an important place in the history of cryptocurrency. The first Bitcoin ATM in the world was installed in a coffee shop in Vancouver in 2013. While the number of crypto ATMs has increased rapidly in the country since then, the convenience offered by these devices has sometimes created serious concerns about illegal earnings being introduced into the system.

Authorities foresee the new ban being implemented to cover all crypto ATMs in the country; Thus, it is planned to prevent the proceeds of crime from leaking into unregistered systems.
