Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong clarified the discussions that started in the Base community after the profile photo change on his personal X account. Armstrong said social media posts should not be considered investment advice or a buying or selling signal for any token.
The controversy began when Armstrong changed his X profile photo to an image that resembled the logo of the memecoin called Brain on the Base network. The price of Brain, also known as “Coinbase Man”, rose rapidly after this change. However, when Armstrong later changed his profile photo again, there was a sharp decline in the token price.
Regarding the recent buzz around my profile picture changes and some feelings that the Base community isn’t being supported enough: I appreciate the feedback (even if tough to hear) and I realize you wouldn’t take the time to respond unless you cared.
It seems I wasn’t clear…

Making a statement on the issue on July 20, Armstrong stated that he mostly shares content he finds interesting or entertaining on the internet. Stating that it may not always be known whether these contents are linked to a specific token or project, Armstrong emphasized that profile photos and shares do not indicate support or commitment to any project.
Responding to criticism of “inadequate support” from the Base community, Armstrong acknowledged that he had not been able to convey expectations clearly before and thanked for the feedback. The main purpose of Base is not to highlight specific tokens; He said that the aim is to develop financial infrastructure that can be used in areas such as tokenized stocks, credit protocols, stablecoin payments and memecoin transactions.
Armstrong stated that he will continue to advocate for economic freedom, but will not promote specific tokens or call investors to trade through his personal account. Noting that there are many crypto assets that Coinbase wants to list, Armstrong stated that it is not possible to support all tokens due to regulatory obligations and compliance requirements.
Instead of providing direct price support to projects, Coinbase and the Base ecosystem contribute to projects through developer grants, Base Batches events, Coinbase Ventures and Base Ecosystem Fund investments. In addition, integrating leading Base-based decentralized finance protocols into Coinbase products is part of the efforts to grow the ecosystem.
Armstrong stated that the company will continue to prioritize projects that provide tangible value to users in the long term, and reiterated once again that personal social media activities should not be considered investment advice.
