Rep. Brad Sherman, known as one of the US Congress’ strongest crypto critics, is facing crypto pal Jake Levine in the upcoming primary. Sherman, who represents California’s 32nd district, has long stood out with his negative stance on digital assets and has made this attitude central in his election campaign.

Crypto difference in the election

Although the district is generally seen as an area dominated by Democrats, this year, with Levine’s participation, Sherman became at the center of a cryptocurrency-focused debate, unlike previous races. In his last three public pamphlets, Sherman argues that crypto “poses a systemic threat and supports criminals and human rights abusers.” He also claimed that cryptocurrencies financed his opponent Levine’s campaign.

On the other hand, Jake Levine is trying to stand out by emphasizing local issues and a next-generation approach. He served as a national security official in the White House and as chief climate officer at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Levine is trying to make a difference against Sherman’s rhetoric, which is heavily devoted to the cryptocurrency agenda, by coming to the fore with region-specific promises such as reducing energy costs and affordable housing projects.

Mini dictionary: PAC (Political Action Committee) is the term used in US politics for political committees that collect donations and make propaganda in favor of the candidate or party. Crypto PACs are political committees that conduct lobbying activities in connection with the crypto industry.

Sherman’s stance and criticisms

Sherman has frequently voiced his anti-crypto views in Congress, arguing that some cryptocurrencies, especially XRP, are securities. With this attitude, he is known as one of the sharpest opponents of the sector in the congress. Decentralized Finance entrepreneur Robert Leshner, on the other hand, describes Sherman as one of the harshest opponents in the crypto space, portraying him as SEC Chairman Gary Gensler’s representative in congress.

While Sherman continued to use aggressive language towards the digital asset industry in his election campaign, he also brought forward accusations that he “received support from cryptocurrency circles” against his rival Levine. However, Leshner pointed out that Levine has not received a single penny of aid from political committees in the crypto industry to date.

Financial situation and campaign strategies

Sherman is in a financially advantageous position compared to his opponent in the election race. The majority of voters agree that Sherman will be re-elected once again, according to the current situation. Still, Sherman’s campaign language and aggressive stance on crypto suggest he perceives a real threat from rival Levine. It is noteworthy that Sherman highlights crypto as a trump card against his opponents, especially as we approach June 2, when the primary election will be held.

brad sherman Opposite Increasing anti-crypto regulation Great savings and cash advantage
Jake Levine Positive Solution-oriented approach to innovative technologies and local problems No funding from crypto PACs

Prominent statements in the campaign

The rhetoric used by Sherman in his election campaign is specifically shaped by cryptocurrencies. In his latest posts, he claimed that crypto carries “tremendous risk” and is a danger to society. His rival Levine, on the other hand, emphasizes regional problems and has a young profile that is open to crypto.
