Home Raid and Bitcoin TargetCourt Process and AccusationsIncoming Messages and Defense Strategy

A court in Los Angeles convicted former Los Angeles Police Department member Eric Halem of kidnapping and robbery as a result of the trial regarding the home raid that took place in the city in 2024 and targeted a young cryptocurrency owner.

Home Raid and Bitcoin Target

The prosecutor’s office stated that Halem entered an apartment in Koreatown with three suspects, posing as a police officer. The suspects handcuffed and restrained a 17-year-old teenager and his girlfriend, using the tactic they used to gain entry. The criminals took an external drive containing private keys to bitcoin worth approximately $350,000.

During the incident, victim Daniel stated that he was threatened with death by the group, in his statement as a witness using only the first part of his name. It was stated that the suspects used the entrance code of the rented flat with the support of one of them.

Court Process and Accusations

After a nearly two-week trial, the jury found Halem guilty of kidnapping and robbery. It was reported that Halem was still working in the Los Angeles Police Department and was working as a reserve police officer at the time of the incident. During the trial, the prosecution stated that Halem also operated the luxury car rental company DriveLA and tried other ventures.

The verdict was unanimous among the jury members in less than a day. The defendant’s sentencing date was set for March 31. According to the statement, it is stated that Halem may face life imprisonment.

Incoming Messages and Defense Strategy

According to the evidence presented by the prosecutor’s office in court, it was determined that Halem sent messages regarding the radio tappings regarding the robbery after the raid. In addition, after two of his business partners were detained, another message came to the fore in which he wrote that his acquaintances had warned him.

Halem’s attorney, Megan Maitia, questioned the extent of the text messages presented in the case and the manner in which police investigated. The defense claimed detectives only focused on certain messages and that the victim’s narrative was not corroborated.

Additionally, during Daniel’s testimony, his statement that he obtained his bitcoin assets fraudulently was brought up; This detail did not prevent the accusation of robbery.

Another argument of the defense during the trial was that the fact that the group went to the scene in two luxury cars with GPS trackers belonging to Halem’s car rental company did not indicate an organized structure.

Halem did not testify in court and no witnesses were presented by the defense. The defendant’s three partners, who were tried together, have not yet appeared in court; One of these people is recorded as having a criminal record for fraud.
