Wealthy Tron Users Are TargetedMechanism of Action and Methods

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned users about a newly emerging fraudulent activity on the Tron blockchain network. According to the official notification, fake cryptocurrencies have been sent to some people’s wallets under the name FBI in recent days. By giving the impression of an official seizure notice, these digital assets attempt to trick wallet holders into believing their funds have been frozen for money laundering. The aim of the scammers is to make users panic and share their identity or wallet information.

Wealthy Tron Users Are Targeted

The fraud attempt in question specifically targets high-balance Tron wallets. In the statement, it was reported that wallets with seven-digit Tether (USDT) balances are also the focus of this method. In the warning made by the FBI’s New York Branch, it was emphasized that tokens sent with the name of any institution should not be relied upon.

Mechanism of Action and Methods

The fraudsters’ modus operandi is based on low cost. Thanks to the low transaction fees on the Tron network, it is possible to send fake tokens to many wallets in a short time. Scammers managed to target hundreds of wallets this way. So much so that the total cost of approximately 920 transactions made through just one address remained at $40.

The basis of the system is to create a feeling of panic in the user. Tokens arriving in wallets contain statements in the accompanying description that the assets are frozen for regulatory reasons. From this point on, users are directed to fake websites that ask them to share their credentials or private keys.

Another method stands out as the address poisoning technique. Here, attackers aim to make users make copy-paste mistakes by generating addresses that resemble real wallet addresses.

According to the data, before the warning was announced, the fake tokens in question were located in at least 728 different wallets. This situation reveals the prevalence of fraud.

In the statement made by FBI New York, the following statement was highlighted: “If you encounter any token sent on behalf of the FBI on the Tron network, ignore the relevant account details and do not share personal information in any way.”

Crypto asset frauds in the USA have increased significantly in 2024. According to data released by the FBI, losses increased by 45 percent compared to two years ago. In this process, it turns out that fraudsters tend to target users directly instead of technical vulnerabilities.

Intermediary for TRX transactions This warning creates a significant compliance obligation for cryptocurrency exchanges. While the new fixedcoin law prepared by the regulators is in its final stages, the platforms are also expected to tighten their security controls. Tron blockchain is a frequently preferred infrastructure for such attacks due to its large transaction volume.

Experts advise users to never make transactions when an unfamiliar or unverified token appears in their wallet.
