Breaking News: Voting is Over, US Government is About to Shut Down Again, Cryptocurrencies Are Dropping

Last year, the filibuster up and down followed Trump’s statements about the government shutdown and blocking the budget bill. Just as the effects of the government shutdown were just beginning to fade (this month’s employment data was the first reliable post-shutdown jobs report), now we’re back to square one.

US Government Could Shut Down

The critical vote in the US Senate has just concluded, with the spending package (HR 7148) aimed at preventing a government shutdown being rejected by a vote of 45 to 55. Nearly half of the federal government was in danger of shutting down as of Friday night, as the 60-vote threshold required for the bill to advance could not be reached.

In the procedural vote to advance the bill, there were 55 “no” votes to 45 “yes” votes. All 47 Democratic senators and 7 Republican senators voted together to block the package. Democrats are calling for reform of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the killing of two US citizens (Alex Pretti and Renee Good) by federal agents in Minneapolis.

Democrats; He wants agents to be banned from wearing face masks, a requirement for lapel cameras, and the establishment of independent oversight mechanisms on the use of force.

There may be another vote until Saturday morning, but since the result does not seem to change much for now, we can say that the US Government will be “partially” shut down.

The spending bill had passed the House of Representatives and everyone was focused on today’s vote. 53 Republican Senators will not be able to advance the bill without convincing the Democrats, as the simple majority is not enough and they remain below 60 votes. As a matter of fact, there is a loss of votes even among Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, representing Democrats, said this week;

“I will vote no on any bill that funds ICE until ICE is brought under control and reorganized, and Senate Democrats are largely united on this issue.”

Unlike the shutdown at the end of last year, legislation providing funding for many institutions valid through the end of fiscal year 2026, which ends September 30, has already been passed. This means that many agencies, including the Department of Justice, FBI and Department of Veterans Affairs, will not be affected by this closure. What is important to us economic data isn’t it? partial closure This will cause data delay. Agencies like the IRS will also be affected by the shutdown. Of course, it is also important how long the closure will last. The previous shutdown lasted a record time of 43 days, and if something like this happens again, the first half of the year could be terrible for cryptocurrencies.

The probability of a government shutdown on Saturday reached 75% at Polymarket.
